Multisamples for Dummies v1.0 Nov 24, 2002. Example using sample OBXA_Bass from the site Hello Synthesizers (find the site at http://www.topsitelists.com/bestsites/topaudiosamples/topsites.html, then once at the site, look in synthesizers->Oberheim OB-Xa and download the zip file named "Bass".) Setting the correct key note on a multisample instrument ======================================================== 1) Make a sequence that plays E1 with a piano voice on the synth 2) Assign an EXS24 instrument to a track. 3) On this track, make an alias of the piano sequence so they play the same sequence. 4) In the EXS24 editor, add zone 1 with OBXA_Bass_E1, set key note to E1 and zone range to E1, E1. Now it is clear the two instruments play different notes so you have to experiment with the key note of the zone until they sound the same. 5) In this case, change key note of the zone from E1 to F1. Now follow the rest of the zones: 6) Add zone 2 with OBXA_Bass_E2, set key note to E2 and zone range to E2, E2. 7) Change the piano sequence to play E2 (bass is changed too as it is an alias) 8) Change key note of this zone to F2 to make the notes sound the same. 9) Add zone 3 with OBXA_Bass_A2, with key note and ranges A2. 10) Play A2 on the piano. 11) Key note should be A#2. 12) Add zone 4 with OBXA_Bass_A3, key note and ranges A3. 13) Play A3 on the piano 14) Key note should be A#3. Now the key notes are set properly and it is time to set the zone ranges. (As a side note, notice that the samples ought to have been named OBXA_Bass_F1, F2, A#2 and A#3.) Setting the ranges of each zone =============================== Change the zone ranges until they look like this: Zone 1: C-2 to E1 Zone 2: F1 to E2 Zone 3: F2 to A2 Zone 4: A#2 to G8 Now the intersection between zones 2 and 3 is wrong at notes E2 to F2. Play the notes D2, E2, F2, G2 with one hand and adjust the key note of zone 3 with the other until the intersection sounds as it should. This happens when you change the key note of zone 3 from A#2 to A#1. Also, the intersection between zones 3 and 4 is wrong at notes A2 to B2. Changing the key note of zone 4 to A#2 fixes this intersection. The multisample instrument is now complete and you are ready to play! Note: This formula was tested on the multisampled instrument "Juno106 strings" from site http://www.ksollweb.de/ml/down-s.htm (I think, can't remember where the files were downloaded from exactly) and it worked with that too, but does that mean it will work with all multisampled instruments?
