Important --------- The SDEmax package contains: - SDEmax.HFS: a Mac HFS hard disk image of 96MB containing an installed version of Sound Designer for Emax 1.12 - CopySDEmax.EXE: a small software for Windows XP or higher, which can copy the SDEmax.HFS image to a Mac hard disk, such as a ZIP100MB or an SD card in a SCSI2SD reader. It can be found in the Digidesign folder of the Yahoo Emax group Files section. The SoundDesigner for Emax contained in this package can ONLY BE RUN from a Mac Hard Disk or a Mac Removable Hard Disk (like a ZIP disk or SD card) containing the full SDEmax HFS image. The executable .BIN file for Sound Designer which can be found on this HFS image CAN NOT BE COPIED from this HFS image/hard disk to another Hard Disk or to a Floppy Disk. This is due to a copy protection mechanism which was (probably) activated or enabled at installation time of Sound Designer for Emax a long time ago. The easiest way to use this Sound Designer distribution is to copy the full SDEmax.HFS file to a ZIP 100MB disk, using a USB ZIP drive connected to a Windows PC. Alternatively you can also copy the full SDEmax.HFS file to an SD card, if you are using a SCSI<-->SD reader with your Mac. In that case make sure the size of the "device" in SCSI2SD-Util is set to a value of at least 96MB in size, and its start sector is set to 0. The CopySDEmax program can be used to perform the raw copy of the SDEmax.HFS file to the target disk. The target disk (ZIP, SD, ...) must not have been formatted/initialized by a Mac; CopySDEmax will make sure the Mac will detect the SDEmax HFS system on the disk. After having copied the HFS file, insert the disk in a SCSI drive (ZIP, SCSI2SD, ...) that is connected to a Mac OS 6 or OS 7 system. KEEP THE DISK in the SCSI drive and start up Sound Designer directly from that disk. Copying the Sound Designer software from the disk to a Mac internal Hard Disk or a to floppy disk is useless: the software will fail to start, because it needs its original HFS image ! Burning the SDEmax.HFS file to a CDROM is also useless: when starting Sound Designer, the software needs write-access to its disk. Since a CDROM is read-only, Sound Designer will fail to start from a CDROM. Sound Designer for Emax 1.12 will only work properly on "early" Macs with the slower 68000 processors (512, Plus, Classic, SE). The risk of software crashes or software freezes becomes higher with faster 68K processors, especially during RS422 communication. Final note: some virus scanners (on Windows) report that the SDEmax.HFS file contains malware. This is probably caused by a pattern of bytes in the HFS file which correspond to a known malware pattern. Once the HFS file is copied to a disk which will only be used on the old Mac, you can of course remove the SDEmax.HFS file from your Windows computer.
