6 FREQ RESPONSE TEST gives digital noise!?!

6 FREQ RESPONSE TEST gives digital noise!?!

2006-04-09 by [cYcLoThYmIqUe]

Another mute XL-7 tonight, :(

Has anyone encoutered this problem?
All of a sudden, the XL-7 sounds like a 8bit sampler, with white noise
all over the sounds. And then, nothing, no sound on analog or digital
outputs.

When doing DIAGNOSTICS tones, whatever the frequency, it's all digital
noise, except a few times when the Command Station does actually output
a fine tone, at random. It says there's no ROM inside: yeah right, there
are 4, and it played nice a few hours ago.

This comes from a mint XL-7, always switched off with the... er...
switch on the back, in perfect condition, not a scratch, no gig, no
smoke, nothing.

Any clue? Thanks.

Did you try re-seating the ROMs ?

Sounds like bad connections on the sound roms. I'd open it up, take out all four sound roms and reseat them. You could even clean the contacts with a typical pencil eraser or with rubbing alcohol if they look oxidized. In case you're wondering, the XL-7 pulls the sine waves for the frequency test off the roms, so if they have a bad connection, you'll hear exactly what you've described.

Thanks Bob & Aaron, I'll try that later today and keep you posted.

Did what you both say.
The ROMs were firmly locked in their respective slots, but it seems a
little pin of one of these slots has been somewhat broken, and was
making a short cut in the groove of the slot 4, between two adjacent
pins. I removed it, even though I could not locate from were it came!?!
Anyway, cleaned the slots and ROMs before putting 'em back in place.

Tada! All the tests are okay and the XL-7 is back alive.

Thanks all, and sorry for having asked before checking the obvious.
