Freeman String Symphonizer Schematics?

Freeman String Symphonizer Schematics?

2011-08-01 by Paul Krull

Can anyone point me to service documentation for the mighty Freeman String Symphonizer? Is the layout of this instrument something that might be familar to an old school organ tech?
Thanks,
Paul T

A bit of '70s trivia here...
Wasn't the Freeman string synthesizer that was used in the older Lowrey organs, which they called their "String Symphonizer"? Does anyone know what they used for their "Brass Symphonizer"? If I remember correctly, these had a Really GOOD and Full Sound, especially with the large compliment of speakers that Lowrey put into their consoles.

I just happen to have both the Lowrey H25-3 with a string and brass symphonizer and I just got a "stand alone" Freeman String Symphonizer. The H25-3 is in excellent condition though the power supply needs a recap at this point. They both sound great, though I don't know who designed the brass symphonizer. I'm much fonder of the string symphonizer than the brass, which now that you mention it is not represented in the Cordovox Symphonizer. The Freeman has one dead key and about a half octave of the high strings is missing at the top octave and I'll need to re engineer the swell/glide pedal.
    Thanks for the link!

I see that this thread is for the later, electronic, Freeman String Synth. Does anyone have any info on the early "Tape" unit?

You mean a Mellotron or Chamberlin? The different versions of the Freeman were all electronic and no tapes were involved. http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/feb07/articles/freemanstring.htm

Hi Folks:
I've finally got my Freeman String Symphonizer in the shop for repairs but now find the link below broken. Does anyone have the schematics for the Freeman?
  Thanks

Freeman String Symphonizer lamp

2012-05-02 by John Wieczorek

I need one bulb for my freeman.
The service manual gives a part number of 939-020499, but nothing comes up in searches.
I've tried my local old-time hardware/appliance shop and they couldn't identify the bulb.

any leads?

best,

john

I think I got this from that CEM3374 site. I'm posting an alternative link:

umich.edu/~damont/Freeman_String_SM 2.pdf

Have your tech check the stacked circuit boards for broken joints first. On mine, they were all sagging in the middle, and the joints had cracked causing all sort of problems. Actually... has anyone done anything to address this design problem on their machines? I've never seen such board sag.. it's like they are made of cardboard. I guess just adding some more standoffs in the middle of the boards would help.

Also - I don't think that all of the octaves are supposed to work for all of the voices. So... if you think that's a problem with the machine, it may not be. I'm not actually sure about this... but I think it's correct.

best,

DT

You are correct, the upper voice doesn't sound in the highest octave of the keyboard.
I know this because I spent an hour trying to find the "problem" when I first brought mine home.:-)

Speaking of octaves, I think there's an unused bass octave available from the dividers ( I need to look at the schematics to confirm). That would make an interesting hack...

Thanks for the pointers. The tech has already fixed my divider issues and a dead key that left the factory with no solder as well as a couple other little problems like no audio at all from the output. He's now investigating replacing the missing volume pedal with glide kick switch and I'm afraid I just authorized replacing the bushings which will be very expensive. I took it tomy local organ repair guy and the technology is very familiar to them. He played it for me over the phone this morning while admiring the animation and detail of all the chorusing and modulation.
   Thanks,
         Paul

Hey Paul,

Congrats on getting it up and running. And thanks to evening1 for confirming the top octave thing. I haven't played mine in a while... it's too big to set up in my house. But it is by far my favorite string synth. People go on about Solina.... but this thing is ALIVE!

Please share any info you get on configuring the glide/volume controller. From the schematic, it looks like the pedal/switch are just a divide down circuit that totals 352Ohms and which maybe could be replaced by a regular variable resistor based pedal and a switch... all the circuitry is in the Freeman. I just don't want to try anything myself...

best,

DT

The glide pedal controller is coming out of a Lowrey tube organ and will be completely stock except for new connectors and a plywood base.
   Thanks,
