Woohoo...New frames...!

Woohoo...New frames...!

2008-01-11 by Mattias

Earlier tonight Markus Resch came by the Roth Händle studios to deliver and adjust two new tape frames. He also took the time to do some general maintenance cleaning tape heads, demagging et.c

The new tape frames…I think…are.

#1

A Very slow waltz/Bolero From the Mellotron MK IIs Rhythms and fills

B Chamberlin Flute

C Chamberlin Bass Clarinet

#2

A Twist in C/Electric Guitar chords

B Acoustic guitar picking/Tubular bells

C Chamberlin Gino Vanelli Double bass/cello/viola

I made some short geeky movies….of course.

Markus adjusting the start of the sounds (very geeky but it might be of interest if you have a tron or if you are thinking of getting new tapes)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-BYLsJjVCg

Markus demoing the sounds #1

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DUg8HPkvxWo

Markus demoing the sounds #2

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L-kxDmE3Plc

Have a great weekend.

I know for sure that atleast I had a good start…!

Mattias,

you lucky bastard, getting the tapes of your choice direct from Markus :-))

1 — The Mark II rythm tapes sound fantastic, but to me as someone who has always only
played M 400 sounds, it's, well, very strange to listen to complete band recordings on a
Mellotron. They sound fantastic, but very much like material for an entainer with a single
keyboard, playing music for old couples for the dance. But they sound charming now, over
40 years old. And I am sure you can use them for some inovative stuff, soon.

2 — Make some longer clips! Use more light. This time I couldn't hardly seen anything.
Nearly like a soundclip only :-( Another idea would be to record the instrument directly
via the mixing desk then with the camera microphone. Or is this against an unwritten
YouTube law :-) ??? Anyway, thanks very much for proving us with more or less unknown
sounds. The Tubular Bells sounds extremly authentic, I think. Has anyone ever used that
sound live or in studio?

Greetings, Thomas

I've got the Tubular Bells in my Mark V on the right keyboard and the St. John's Wood Pipe
Organ on the left keyboard and they really do sound great together! Especially when I
stomp on the Moog Taurus II pedals I have under my Mark V talk about shaking the walls!

Mattias,

What's your total frame count so far? I think there's an opening in
the Guinness Book of World Records and Beer.

Re: [newmellotrongroup] Re: Woohoo...New frames...!

2008-01-13 by Mattias

Hey hey Thomas,
Thank you for your comments...When it comes to the Mark II rhyths & fills I use them actually quite a lot in my recordings. As a big fan of Optigans, talentmakers and Orchestrons I love the whole weird loopy dead orchestra feel.
The Twist in C isn't the simplest rhythm to sneak into a recording but it sounded so great so I just had to have it...Also with time stretching functions the sounds are a lot easier to use now than 15 years ago...
My films are often short and dark...I use a very old digital camera and a lot of the times I film just to document a sound or a session, no time for bright lights and cable pulling. I post them on youtube because even though both Streetlys and Markuss listening pages are great it really doesn't compare to hearing someone actually playing the darn thing. Also I wanted to show how the instruments in the studio sound and look and when it comes to the Mellotron I thought it was interesting to show that there are more than three Mellotron sounds that you can actually use...
And yes...I realise that I am fortunate to have Markus a ten minute walk from my flát...The funny thing is that whenever I order sounds...I always leave with a lust for even more frames and more sounds...
A Mellotron with one tape frame is a very expensive piece of equipment...

These are frames 10 and 11.
And 11 is a very odd number...12 is better don't you think...?
I am getting Markuss Frame cases that holds 7 frames...And I also think my OCD will go crazy with those empty slots...
And considering the cash that will be pouring into the studio as word spreads about the Twist in C sound....There will be more frames.

Ok, after listening again to the
clips I have to say that the Twist in C is extremly well made
with a lot
  of variations.
I guess no modern single-entertainer-keyboard (I don't
know the english word for what we
use to call in German
"Alleinunterhalter"...) (those with floppy disks — "Personal
  Keyboard"
often called) will sound as authetic then these
  tapes!

I don't know about the cape, didn't get one when I got the Mark V and these tapes were in
my Mark V when I got it. So it must have been extra or the original owner kept it.

However I can play excerpts from "Six Wives of Henry VIII" since I have a Minimoog on top
of the Mark V...... ;-)

Of course you can.

But I'm not good enough at doing that or translating my vision to the musicians so I am stuck with the absurd idea of using a Mellotron to simplify things.

Have you ever tried to get a bunch of Bees to buzz chords in a orderly fashion ? Call it cheating but I'll use the Mellotron any and everyday.

I agree. If the frame case holds 7 frames, then multiples of 7 would
be the ideal way to go...14, then 21, then 28...

Sampled bees make for extremely limited music. You should sample the other notes as well.
