Dopefer A-122 filter

Dopefer A-122 filter

2011-05-20 by nik

I really like theLow pass filter sound of the Curtis chips and especially Cem 3320 that is inside many analogues from the past like SCI Pro One..!
I am thinking to buy the A-122 which has the curtis chip Cem 3379 which as i know is very similar to Cem 3320

But i already have the A-111-5 (Dark Energy) module which has an one voice curtis chip (cem3394)

So i wanna know if A-122 fllter sound is the same with the filter that Dark energy has...
Both are curtis but Dark energy's resonance sounds a bit distorted and not so clear ...
Is A-122 better or different???

Hi,
I totally agree with you on the sound of CEMs.
Personally I think the DE filter and a A-122 are quite different from another. The A-122 is one of my favourite 4-pole LPs (I have almost all Doepfer filter modules) as is the A-105. The A-122 has a lovely 'wet' and rather softish smack to its sound (with some resonance added and mod). Something I don't find with the DE's filter.
Of course it depends on what you feed into the filter, whether you overdrive it (level) etc etc ...

Yes, the 24dB lowpass of the A-106-6 is quite the same as the A-122.

Best wishes

Hi,
I personally think they have different sonic expressions - might be similar technically though.
I took the time to record different Doepfer 4-pole filters you might be interested in checking out:

and

http://soundcloud.com/jakobsweb/doepfer-a108-a120-a102-a101-1

I hope this helps.

you're welcome.
they certainly are similar from a basic sound point of view. Maybe it's just me but I think the A-122 has a much softer 'bottom' when modulated, more punchy. I guess it depends on whatever sonic values you're looking for. It's splitting hairs to some and a philosophy to others. Both filters are great and you can't go wrong with either of them.
