Paper interim window test result

Paper interim window test result

2007-12-17 by Richard Smallfield

Hi,
I printed some BW prints on several papers.

The ink was UC K2 (QTR) but the real test here is the paper yellowing properties:

The papers were:
Bright - Epson Enhanced Matte (acidic), Red River Aurora Bright (rag), Moab Entrada Bright (rag), PremierArt Matte BW (alpha cellulose)
Natural - PremierArt Hot Press Rag 210, Moab Entrada Natural Rag

After six weeks sellotaped to the inside of a window, the Enhanced Matte, Entrada Bright and Aurora Bright had all yellowed to a similar extent. To illustrate this, I can report that the Entrada Bright is virtually indistinguishable from the Entrada Natural that has been in the window for the same period.

The PremierArt Matte BW had yellowed *far* less, though it *had* yellowed when compared with the dark storage control print. The tone of the neutral print has become warm. (As an aside, I have an unframed print on the wall with this paper that has been there for nine months. The paper yellowed a bit, but also the QTR UC-K2 neutral print has warmed considerably. It still looks nice, but is warm, no longer neutral.)

The natural rag papers - PremierArt Hot Press and Entrada Natural - were unchanged after six weeks. (The dMax of the Entrada is better than the PremierArt Hot Press as it was at the time of printing.)

I hope this information is of use.

Richard

Interesting results; thanks for posting them.

Premier Art has told me they are using some titanium dioxide in some
coatings, but I could not get details. That is not a fluorescing OBA, but
just very white and stable.

The Premier Art Smooth BW that I'm using with the Eboni-6 inkset is the
brightened version of the Hot Press, which is the archival standard as far
as I can tell. The BW is also made to be as stable as possible. It has
probably at most a third of amount of OBAs as the Matte BW you tested, and
it's a better paper, so I'm hoping it'll be quite stable. I have not tested
it yet, however. On the good papers the fading is usually not more on the
brightened than the natural versions, it's just a matter of the OBAs fading.
