Bulk Ink in Europe

Bulk Ink in Europe

2005-12-06 by fotojali

Hi,
I am new to this group, starting my digital b&w work...

As I succesfully unclogged the print head of an old Epson 3000 (which
had been out of use for 2 yrs) recently, and practised a little with
filling cartridges (quite easy actually ;-), I'd like to fill with 4
black/grey inks.

Which are the bulk inks that you folks could recommend, and where do
European printers purchase them.

I apologize if my questions are too basic and already answered
elsewhere; in that case I'd be grateful for redirecting me...

Thanks
fotojali

MIS seems fine. I buy them direct. The best shipping methode depends
which country you are in. Certainly in the UK the prices beat the
local suppliers, including shipping. A friend in Germany had a bit
more customs trouble.
I have not tried any different inks to compare.

Just a quick note to UK BT Yahoo users who use the Yahoo Spamguard
filter- I found over 20 Digital BW messages from the last few days (& a
few from the QTR group) in the Spam folder today. Couldn't say what's
causing it - could even be the Yahoo trailers in the emails which is
somewhat ironic.

I've tried MIS and yes I like them too. But I have some trouble with
customs. I'm in Finland, and I ordered ink bottles from MIS 3 years
ago and had to pay large customs tariffs. Haven't ordered from USA
since...

The only pigment quad inks available in Europe were Ilford's
Monokrome for Encads but I think a 3000 will print them as
well. Duck soup would print in a 3000. Then there are the
Lyson dye quad inks + small gamut with a mixed reputation.
That's all I think.

But everywhere you see Epson K3 clones popping up. With QTR +
the 3000 and PK + MK + LK +LLK of the K3 sets it should be
possible to make a universal gloss + matte quad printer. At
the edge of coarse results though.

See:
http://www.printerowners.co.uk/
for example

Price wise ordering MIS inks may be a better idea.

Yes, perhaps over the edge of coarseness.

I think the 3000 needs the MK plus 3 shades of gray to be reasonably smooth.
Many of us used the Cone PiezoBW, or MIS UT-FS or UT-FSN inks with these
printers with good results. All of these have the same densities, including
a light gray that is considerably lighter than the k3 LLK.

I would not consider the 3000 to be a good glossy printer in any case. So I
would not bother with the PK.

With the MIS UT-FS or FSN inks I and others have Photoshop image adjustment
curves available that partition the inks, old PiezoBW software is probably
still around that can do the job, and I assume QTR also supports the
printer, which was a good old workhorse.

I used to recommend MIS but with recent experience of the compasny
repeatedly sending me wrong or inappropriate components and failing
to fulfil promises, I can't in honesty recommend them anymore. An
apology would have been something, particularly after waiting two
months, an I am still waiting!

You may, of course, be luckier. I suggest, however, if you can that
you check that they have supplied what you ordered. The problems I
had were with a pre-filled CIS that had the PK chip for an Eboni cart
fitted, and I could not be sure what ink filled the cart and the
tubes.

I think they sell a good product, and I will continue ordering from
them, but I will take care and suggest you do likewise.

My first printer with CIS was bought second hand and came with
Permajet VT Blax inks. They supplied curves made by one Paul Roark,
same as supplied by MIS ... draw your own conclusions. I switched to
MIS at much less than half the price.

Permajet still sells a set of mono inks, perhaps worth a look at if
there is a reseller in your country (they only list Norway and Sweden
on their web page). I did not try to work out if they would be useful
to you. I cannot make any recommendation.

If you need color inks, you might want to look at
http://www.weink.com or their "bulk" order site of
http://www.getinkexpress.com . They will also ship world wide. If you
need a CIS, I would recommend http://www.InkRepublic.com

Hello

I've bought the CIS Ink Republik and MIS inks K4 for Epson r2400. It
works perfectly and I have'nt had a problem with transportation and
the customs. I live in Spain.

Paul.
I use the 3000 with a version of your VM mix(slightly lighter and more
desaturated toner). It gives a narrower, but adequate for my purposes,
range of tones using QTR. For much of my work from older film
negatives it works wonderfully well at anything from 11x14 on up.I
have far more of a problem in overcoming film grain and tonality
issues with old and small negs than any dot issues.

You do need to make your own linearisation curves for the 3000 under
QTR as there were none predone that I saw in the distribution I'm
currently using. Your recent release of the scanner___create-icc
workflow info should help folks greatly with that. I suspect they can
pick standard curves from Roy's package that approximate their own
printers timeframe and then use create-icc and your workflow or a
densitometer to finish off for their own use. It also is not that
difficult to generate the QTR curves from scratch using the scanner
technique even without create-icc. The set of gray, matt, photo profiles
that Roy provided initialy can be used to good effect as well.

Duane

I complained in the previous post about MIS, but I thought I should
now say that I received the outstanding part of the order today. It
was posted on 3 January 2005. The order thus took some three months
to complete.
