There was a very brief article in Shutterbug magazine, so the new printers
are for real. I think it was the June issue, which was not on the stands
last week, but I think was mailed to subscribers. Rumor says the
introduction is in May.

A copy of the 4800 Reference Manual was available on the UK Epson site, but
it has now been removed.

I'm pretty much an Epson junky, and have owned all their top consumer
printers since the PhotoEX. I guess I missed the 1200. I'm somewhat
skeptical about the new 4800/7800/9800 printers though. You still need to
swap out the photo black and matte black inks, and there is no gloss
optimizer, so glossy prints are questionable. Maybe the new K3 inks will fix
bronzing and gloss differential, even without gloss optimizer

It's ironic that Epson has chosen to attack B&W printing with this new K3
inset in the 2400/4800/7800/9800, since B&W is one of the things I am very
happy with on the 2200. Maybe the three black inks will give us a better
Dmax. That would be very nice.

the rumour and pre-announcement stage !? Just was on the way to buy

Wait until May 10th. -> official introduction.

The 7800/9800 have new head - the same as 4000 and maybe new head
transport construction -> faster and better print, no vertical
banding?

The switching of Matte Black and Photo black is not so expensive -
check the archive of EpsonWideFormat mailing list and you will find
the recipe.

Last year Epson introduced a "film only" Brit-nominclature "3200-
sumthin'" (not similar to the US 3200 flatbed) and didn't even
bother to mention it in the US (no surprise...photo-i reviewed it as
equal or inferior to the 4870..at far bigger L$).

Epson's an ace, but they're not nearly as adept at advertising as
HP ( constant highly aggressive HP printer radio ads on my state's
most expensive station).

Seems like that film-only machine was a leaden trial baloon...maybe
we'll never see a 2400 or 4800 in the US, instead a 2500 and a 5000?
Maybe they're reading this group, aware of the enthusiasm for glossy
and B&W :-)

Is "Shutterbug" generally considered credible? Serious question.

And a valid one! Some brit referred to it as 'Gutterbug' on the
Compuserve forum that David B Brooks hangs out on... some of their
reviews are of questionable value, because they simply won't point out
the deficiencies of a product. You have to 'read between the lines' and
compare with other sources when evaluating a new product. But for
straight info/industry news, they are pretty reliable.
