Somerset Enhanced?

Somerset Enhanced?

2003-05-22 by Henrik Frejborg

Hi,

I'm looking into the alternatives in 100% cotton, acid-free papers and
saw this paper, Somerset Enhanced. What's the opinion on it?

cheers,
Henrik Frejborg

I have been playing with Somerset PE Velvet for the past several
months both in rolls (13") colour production on a 1280 using
Generations Ink and in sheets on a 740 using MIS Quad Tone. Colour
is good, a bit muted and I needed to play with the profiles a lot.
The B&W with the Quad Tones I really like. I have to order it out of
the states (from Canada) if you live in Europe it may be cheaper as I
think it is made in England.

Legion makes a 225 gsm 100% cotton acid free Somerset Photo Enhanced
paper with a velvet finish that's one of my favorites. Its widely
available in the States -- don't know about Europe. Their website is
www.legionpaper.com

I'm printing using PiezoTones on a 1280 and also using UltraChromes
on the 2200 with the Epson RIP. Great results in both cases with this
paper. I think Inkjet Mall has it available for order too. It cost me
locally about $32 USD for 25 sheets of 8.5"x11" paper -- not cheap,
but really nice paper.

I believe it's made in Somerset England by Saunders. I think I'll try
some.

Somerset photo enhanced is/was one of the earlier coated watercolour papers
for inkjet - many of the "old timers" here have used it for quadtones.

it's still a very good paper. In many respects it is fairly similar to H
Photo Rag - it is possibly a tad warmer and has a little more texture.
Photo rag may also be a touch crisper. It has a very nice look to it though.
Probably because PR prints so close to Epson Enhanced Matt that you can use
EHM for proofing, whereas Somerset Enhanced just needs a little tweaking.

I think what generally happened is a lot of people switched to photo rag
when it came out and have stuck with it.

I still use it every now and then. I did a show about 3 years ago with
Somerset Enhanced and the standard MIS quads. I still have those prints
around and they still look great. two or three have been on my wall (and I
recently saw one on a wall at a friends) and they have stood up to the
window light well.
