One of the knobs on my AN1X is loose. Tap it and the numbers jump all over. Is there any easy fix? Jimmy

Looks like a bad contact .... or less likely a worn out pot. Try to clean it (inside) with an electric contact cleaner, turn it up and down when you spray the cleaner inside, wipe out the excess liquid and check if your troubles are over . If not, you have to change the pot for a new one....(same ohmic value - same shaft type) or at least the solder joints on each of the 3 lugs of the existing pot. With a good soldering iron with a fine tip, not an ice axe, please, and electronic grade solder! Cheers J.F.

Jimmy & Jeff, If I know Jimmy by now, he's all atwitchin' since you talked about internal organs. But not to worry, Jim me mon... it is a simple fix for a tech, should run under $100 at the most. The costs will be due to having bench time to get to the offending pot (the tech name for the control under the knob) and possibly sourcing an identical replacement. IIRC someone on the list said that they had found the correct part from a major supplier like Digi-Key or Mouser. Any help? If Jimmy could buy the part first, he might save markup money when he puts it in the shop. *Ed Edwards* ><> <>< <>< ><> http://www.ezekielswheel.com http://www.untiedmusic.com/ezekiel http://mysite.verizon.net/vze29bq6 Jeff wrote:

Hello Ed ! OK, i have a job in electronics, and before it was a hobby for me when i was a teenager.... So for me it's quite natural. Jimmy, if you're afraid at removing the cover of your keyboard and changing something inside, don't worry, don't be ashamed and try to find someone to fix it for you. Maybe one of your friends can do that for you .... I'm still trying to get the last O.S. revision of the AN1X here in France... i suppose it will be a lot of fun, just looking at the eyes of the local Yamaha dealer (!) ... He told me "impossible, there is no floppy disk drive on the AN1X" (!!). I have to give him a mini electronics course about ROMs, RAMs and so on ... Cheers J.F. Ed Edwards a \ufffdcrit :

Knob # 4 is now offical defunct. For a long time it was loose and the parameter bounced all over the place, now it does nothing. Jimmy

Hi Jimmy! I suppose that your pot cursor is now loose ; the only thing you can do is to change it (same ohmic value AND taper curve, same size). I don't see why it would not be a standard value with a linear curve, but you have to check it first. Have a good "soldering party" :-) Cheers J.F.

It's a non-detented rotary-push switch or sumthin' smuthin' right? or perhaps ask your local yamaha repair center for say, part numbers / spare part. Might help :D (crap, I still need to send a mail to my yamaha repair center to get a replacement cap) http://www.avishowtech.com/mbhp/images/encspecs18.gif Bourne's rotary switch, detented, with switch. Well, the detents can be removed no prob.. http://www.avishowtech.com/mbhp/buy.html Maybe Alps has some replacements as well? :) Would be great if it's just something like that. or well, maybe I've just been reading too much on the midibox forums and way too much into the DIY zone with my head. Mouser carries both the Bourns and Alps encoders - the 24 detent models. Bourns #652-PEC11-4225F-S24 $1.68 each Alps #688-EC12E2424404 $2.66 each I need to get ahold of my contacts @ Yamaha and 1) see where my service manual and update chip are and 2) see if I can find out who/where they get their encoders from. Jimbo - Yamahaha made a bunch of synths with similar knobbies back 10 years ago. Don't give up hope, BUT, don't think they're a simple to find replacement from Rippio Shack. Seek and ye shall find... the A series samplers used the same type knobs and I remember the list members discussing replacing them. Google it up, buddy.
