Subject: Re:Does anyone know the setup fo Baba O'riley by The Who?

Rick,

On "Baba O'Riley" Pete Townshend used a 1968 Lowrey Berkshire TBO-1 organ with the "marimba repeat" preset function.

Other Who songs with unique setups/presets included:
∗"Won't Get Fooled Again" (1971) - Pete plays block chords spread between the two keyboard beds of the Lowrey TBO-1 organ. The output of the TBO-1 was fed into the audio input of the EMS VCS-3 synthesizer. The first bit of processing to be applied to the organ sound is a low-frequency oscillator (LFO) controlling the frequency of a voltage-controlled filter (VCF), using a sine or triangle waveform. In other words, the VCS3 is turning the TBO-1's tone from mellow to bright, up and down automatically.
∗∗Equipment: Lowrey Berkshire TBO-1, EMS VCS-3 synthesizer

∗"The Relay" (1972) - Pete's guitar is being processed through an ARP 2600 synth. The output of the guitar went into the audio input of the VCF section of the synth. Using the sample-and-hold function the output is connected to the VCF, which automatically turns the frequency (tone) of the filter to different, random positions in a rhythmic style which creates the unique sound heard on this song.
∗∗Equipment: ARP 2600, overdriven electric guitar

∗"Join Together" (1972) - The Jew's harp sound on the intro is an ARP synth, which sounds like a 4- or 8-bar loop that Pete built the rest of the song on. The organ part which comes in two bars before the vocals is interesting to note as it is the same setting used for "Baba O'Riley," but set to a slower speed. The TBO-1 is also fed through the LFO, which can be heard on the demo version that is titled "Join Together with the Band."
∗∗Equipment: ARP 2500/2600, Lowrey Berkshire TBO-1

∗"Who Are You" (1978) - Pete's overdriven electric guitar is being processed by the ARP's VCF, which is being controlled by a triangle wave LFO that creates the pulse sound we hear. The guesswork is found right here! Listening to this song you can hear the ARP being panned from left to right by the same LFO that controls the filter. Rich Rowley still hasn't figured out how this was done and Pete only acknowledges this bit as a "secret ARP patch." Rowley cheated on his "Who Are You" track and used a plug-in known as "chopper" which creates the same sound.
∗∗Equipment: ARP 2500/2600, overdriven electric guitar

∗"You Better You Bet" (1981) and "Eminence Front" (1982) - Both songs feature a 1977 Yamaha E-70 electric organ in their sound, and on the instrument Pete uses what is known as the "auto arpeggio" function, which when the chords on the lower keyboard bed are held, it automatically plays the notes of the chord up, down, up and down, randomized, et al.

Other tracks which feature the TBO-1 organ include "Cut My Hair" and "The Punk and the Godfather" (both 1973) and "I've Known No War" (1982).
