Subject: ugh. replaced TKC cmos chips. no i have NO aftertouch. ideas?

hi guys, hope you can help me help my cs80. i was having a key assignment issue, so i decided to try replacing the TKC cmos chips. now, my aftertouch is gone altogether!
i used the sockets with the decoupling caps built in- the exact part # listed on scott/old crows site. i double checked my polarity on each chip before putting it in, and after. i wrote the chip # and polarity right on the board, so i wouldnt make mistakes, and have double checked the chip # and polarity 3 times now.
i checked the in/out voltages to the board, and i believe they are correct. the +8.5 and -6.5 are DEFINITELY correct, but im not sure what each in/out wire should read, but none of the wires were crimped/disconnected/etc.
i took voltage reads on pins 1 and 14, or 1 and 16, and each one read -6.5/+8.5. i did not take individual voltage reads for each leg, as truthfully, im not sure what i should be looking for.
the only thing that i can think could be wrong is this: when i first powered up, checked, and powered down to look at the board, there were some legs that had a black residue on the brand new solder joint. there were two legs on a chip that i thought may have shorted together- i redid the solder joint.
i dont have enough spares to replace every cmos chip. is there a way for me to check each leg of each chip? is there a more obvious issue i may be overlooking?
thanks so much for your help guys, i really appreciate any advice-rj
