Hi folks,
Pete Forrest´s revised edition of his A-Z of analogue synthesisers gives a
lot of info as to who used a CS80 where. Apart from that, here´s what I´ve
gathered:
basically all Vangelis stuff from "Beaubourg" until "1492"is choc full of
CS-80 (his "Blade Runner" bootleg album probably being the best of the
bunch). Amazing timbral scope, too. From extremely massive to very sweet and
almost "kitschy". Just for the record, Vangelis owned (or still owns) nine
CS-80s.
Kate Bush used one extensively on "The Dreaming", and so did Suzanne Ciani
on "Seventh Wave" (or was it "Velocity of Love"?). One of Vangelis´ machines
(borrowed from him).
Joel Fajerman used one on "Les Aventures des plantes" (issued in Argentina,
I think, as "Las aventuras de las plantas").
All albums by Passport and Snowball where Kristian Schultze played keyboards
(from about 1978 onwards). Schultze used to be an avid CS-80 user (two
machines) and sold them both a while ago. I think he even used it on some
Cusco albums (the other project he was involved in, just like playing
keyboards on the early anime TV series "Captain Future").
Klaus Schulze also loved his CS-80. His album "Dune" is almost entirely
CS-80. On some other albums from the early 1980s, the CS is also featured
strongly.
Peter Gabriel used one on his 1986 album "So" ("Don´t give up", a duet
with -- surprise, surprise -- Kate Bush).
The first album by Nina Hagen where Reinhold Heil played keyboards. Now, a
punk band with a CS-80.. this is really bourgeois.
ABBA, of course. I´m quite sure they not only used the GX-1 but also the
CS-80 (on "The Album", for instance. "Eagle" would be a prime example).
Tomita used the CS-80 a good deal on "The Ravel Album", "Dawn Chorus" and
"Grand Canyon".
Tim Blake had a CS-80 when he recorded "New Jerusalem", and his sideman
Jean-Philippe Rykiel also had one.
Angelo Branduardi used at least two, if not three CS-80s (a friend of mine
bought one off his keyboard player, and this keyboard player had two CS-80s
at his farmhouse).
Jean-Michel Jarre used a CS-60 on earlier albums (like "Equinoxe" and
"Concerts in China") and obtained a CS-80 for the recording of "Oxygene
7-13" in 1997 which also showed up in all promo material (like the MTV
interview at his studio).
I´m quite sure that Frank Duval also had one ("Give me your love" sounds
like there´s a lot of CS-80 used).
Gerd Führs (of Schicke, Führs, Fröhling) was a session player in Hamburg
during the 80s and was one of the few CS-80 specialists at Yamaha Germany
until he died in a car crash in 1993.
Don Slepian used one on "Sonic Perfuma".
Rolf Trostel had a CS-80 for years and used it for some (yet unreleased)
concerts, but the instrument ended up in an upright position behind his
living room door, serving as a nice shelf for a bunch of cacti.
Tim Cross played CS-80 on mike Oldfield´s "QE2" album, and I´m quite sure
mike also had a CS-80 of his own. pete lemer played a CS80 during the
Oldfield concert live at knebworth in 1982.
Frank Zappa also used a CS-80 (but i don´t know on which albums).
Joerg Strawe recorded his album "Jewels" back in 1993 and used the CS-80 a
great deal (musically, the album isn´t really worth listening IMO, but here
you go...).
John Kerr recorded all his early albums between 1983 and 1988 on just a
CS-50 (does that count?) and a Roland VP-330.
As for still touring / recording with one:
The humble author of these lines is currently finishing recordings for an
album that is about 75% CS-80 (the rest being shared between Rhodes 73 Mk. 1
piano, Mini Moog, Roland VP-330 and some other stuff).
How about compiling some CS-80 recordings of all list members?
Regards,
Stephen.
