Dear Ciscomanvann,
NOOOO!! They're two Different Creatures. I think you still need the
MonoPoly. Reasons:
∗ - They both use the SEM 2044 Transistor Ladder LPF chip, which is
about as close to a real Moog filter as one can go without violating
patents...
∗ - The MonoPoly delivers Kick-Ass Bass, what with its 4 stable SEM
2033 VCOs, which can be absolutely as PHATT as you like!
∗ - The MonoPoly has a WEALTH of modulation gimmicks that you just
won't find on the Polysix. Oscillator Sync, two LFOs ("MGs" in
Korg-speak), two Envelope Generators, Noise Source... It's
"semi-modular" in the best sense...
∗ - The Polysix has that NICE Chorus/Phase/Ensemble generator onboard.
That's a whole 'nother toy to play with, IMHO, and adds a LOT to the
PS-6's characteristic sound.
∗ - They Both have those Cool Arpeggiators, the Chord Hold mode, and
the Unison and Poly modes, too. (And, I have it on good authority that
the Operating System is virtually the same for both!)
Again, IMHO, the two synths, although developed simultaneously, are
'Apples and Oranges'. The MonoPoly allowed Korg to provide those
features most requested, while the Polysix provided lots of polyphony
(for the time) on a serious budget. One compensates for the other.
As you may have guessed, I use both, and find them Both indispensable
for their inherent strengths. The MonoPoly provides a good, solid
bass/lead foundation, while the Polysix fills in the 'gaps'.
I personally would urge you to keep 'em both, and use them to their
fullest. As a (2!) MonoPoly owner, I'm SURE that I haven't explored
half the stuff that these babies are capable of! :-D
Korg-ishly Yours,
Dave Garfield
