The ARP in the P6 works like this. On note is played and continues
to sound until the next note is trigerred or the ARP is switched off.
If you want to end the note earlier you have to program an EG on
the VCA and/or VCF to fade out the sound.
There is no difference in internal/external triggering. The only thing
that's happening when you connect a plug into the ARP Trig In jack is
that the internal oscillator (a 555 timer btw) is diconnected and
the signal from the external source is used to advance the ARP.
I cannot tell it from my head, but I'm pretty sure that the input
is of the switch-to-GND type and has a pullup resistor.
You also can use a footswitch (normally open) to advance the ARP.
