I forgot, you also obviously have to do the diode mod before putting in a non rechargable battery. Details are on the net but you probably have them already.

Solder in any flat CR type battery + holder (costs pence) and you are back and functioning. I cut out the varta time bomb, repaired 1 trace, soldered in a new IC and flat batter holder (can be tight so will need the right angle) and a CR-2032 or equiv and it works fine.
