I switched it into manual mode, and tried flipping around the knobs,
and nothing came out. So, I don't believe that this is the issue.
(Unless I am doing something wrong?)

When you remove the battery you lose all sounds, putting the battery
back again doesn't restore the sounds, you have to either create all
new ones or load them from a cassette (or other means) again.
