Playing with the old Jupiter 4 I got, I thought I should write a 25 year
review. :-) Like someone said the other day "ever sound this thing makes
sounds like it comes from in the future" or like that. It does. There's a
certain presence to this machine that is just wonderful. Having nothing
whatsoever digital in the signal path helps I think. The 'compu' part of
the compuphonic, when asked to, reads slider and switch positions and
records them away in the memory location selected. And it stays there until
that patch is selected at which time the sliders no longer do anything that
were recorded. Rather the digital information is translated into nice,
smooth, analog voltages which now tell the circuitry how to respond via
analog switching.
Certain sounds are just marvelous. And there's just a tremendous
smoothness about nearly everything. For instance hit I create a tweaky
moderately fast filter rise/fall sound with some light lfo interaction on
the vcf and start the arpegiator, kick on hold button. It creates an
amazing kind of aura musically if things are set right. The sharp edges of
the filter get mooshed out into this plethura of sonic interaction.
I created a sound using the saw lfo yesterday with a gradual vcf
envelope and mid resonance and fairly low cutoff and was playing on it
tonight and ...wow...just sounds like the surreal acoustic guitar being
plucked really proficiently :-). It is a very special machine and I'm
glad to finally get one that didn't need too much work. Anybody know where
to get a few buttons for these things though? Who would have wound up with
all the old roland parts from the late 70's? It's missing 4 of the front
buttons, green, yellow, grey and a white.
Oh and an arpegio interacting with a sound I created just reminded me
so much of the second track on blade runner. Several spots on that sound
like he used this. Also some places on China. If anyone has details about
which synths were used on some of those old tracks let us know! -Bob
