Mellotrons are capable of sounding incredibly creepy and incredibly beautiful... often at the same time. I think that is why people are continually fascinated by them. That and the fact that they are capable of expressing great emotion as you can see by the following photo.

To me it sounds exactly like a grainy old black and white (or sepia, I guess) picture looks. Old grainy pictures are sort of creepy... So is the mellotron, but in the absolute best way possible. I love creepy things, though. That's why it has worked so well in Goblin and Morte Macabre, etc.
