Ah, but it is a scientific fact that whenyou play a chord on a correctly tuned piano, you will not be able toring much in the way of overtones with much power. But with a group of trainedmusicians using their voices and ears, you can ring substantial tonic anddominant overtones with power – this is the measurement of harmonicperfection – the ringing of sympathetic vibrations across the medium ofair is how our ear works. You can try it with two instruments – one suchas a voice or reed instrument, the other a very sensitive instrument like aguitar. If you play one and a string on the guitar vibrates just from the air,you have demonstrated the harmonic sympathy of the instruments. With theperfect chords of a trained group of voices, you can produce overtones withoutany other instrument present other than the medium of the air itself –that is the empirical demonstration of the perfect instrument.
