Methylated spirit is ethanol to which methyl aclohol has been added to stop people drinking it, methyl alcohol can kill you and cause blindness if you drink it. You can buy it easily in the UK and NZ but don't know anout the USA.

So what is Methylated Spirit? Can you ask for it by that name in the
US? I don't know that you can still get Carbon Tetrachloride here. It
used to be available as a product called Carbona, but I haven't seen
that since the early '90s. It was a wonderful cleaning agent. I think
it may have given folks cancer, though.
