For an obect to be an icon it just has to stand for represent
something else. Popularity has nothing to do with it. In that sense I
think the Mellotron is as much an icon as a moogue synthesiser or a
Hammond B3, even if most people don't know what a Mellotron is. Not
that I think the one on Ebay is worth $5800, but of course it's worth
whatever somebody else will pay for it.
