The machine has been restored recently, a great job,also fixed the headblock
to preamp lead issue,which I believe is one of the possible reasons for the
behaviour mentioned above.

The only thing I can think of is that it maybe has something to do with my
swell pedal,had that refitted with a new pot recently.

Any ideas?

In all seriousness, you might want to check the PAL connecter that plugs
into the preamp to make sure you the shield and center wire are making proper
contact.
