Tom, this may surprise you but people still use them on recordings. Mellotrons are experiencing renewed popularity. Would you like to own a fully restored one? I can offer you an exceptional example.

This is a rhetorical question, right? Until the wonders of the Internet, I had to bore anybody who looked knowledgeable with questions about the excellent sound on a few select 60's songs (for that is my era). The songs were '200 light yrs from home", and most of the songs on "days of future passed' (except nights in white satin, which I am sick of); pr'haps a few others. This led to King Crimson, Genesis, and a few others until the dark ages of the late 70s closed over us.
