Subject: RE: [motm] Filters as Oscillators/Hi Hat Patch?

From: "Tkacs, Ken" <ken.tkacs@...>

I just bought another 110 a couple of weeks ago, so they are still in stock
at the moment. FYI - the 110 ∗is∗ a dual VCA, since the ring modulator can
be used as one if you feed a CV into one of the inputs. I don't know if
there will be an MOTM Ring Mod once the 110 is gone...does anyone know if an
RM was planned for the new 1u VCA or another module...?

I only have one 420 right now but I definitely want more, if for nothing
else than to create bandpass responses.

Personally, I would only use an oscillating filter as a VCO in a real pinch.
The MOTM filters are VERY stable---for filters---but I don't think they are
as stable as the VCOs. So if you repeatedly need more waveforms, it's time
for another VCO, I think. How many VCOs do you need? If you want to make
Minimoog lead sounds, then two or three should do you. I'm from the
Carlos/Tomita school and won't be happy until I have 8 or 10 of those
puppies.

Most MOTM modules are extremely wide range, so anything that can generate
audio can usually dip down into CV ranges. You certainly can use a VCO as an
LFO. The reverse is true, too, but the upper range isn't the full audio
range, and again, tracking stability on the MOTM-300 VCO is unmatched, so
you wont get that same rock-solid performance from using other modules as
oscillators.

Subject:[motm] Filters as Oscillators/Hi Hat Patch?

Ramblings of a mad man:

I want to purchase more new modules soon and need a little advice. I would
like to get another VCA, but is the 110 still in stock? I know it was
announced as "running out" a while ago now. I figure I can wait for the dual

VCA I guess, but I want volume tremelo soon as well as dual leads from my
one modular. Do I wait or get the classic with the CEM in it? Opinions
appreciated.

Also, how many 420 owners have more than one of these filters? At this point

I only have one and would like to get another one soon. How often do most of

you end up using your filters as sine oscillators? Robert Rich's system from

NAMM is full of filters used like this a lot of the time. I have not tried
this, but can you make a filter self oscillate and tune it down to LFO
range? I'll try this tonight.

Brings me to oscillators. 3rd VCO vs 2nd LFO. Which would better suit me?
Hhhmmm... I think VCO for the accuracy of the tracking if I want to use it
as a lead or bass. I do love the shape control on the LFO though and if you
pump a little voltage to the cv in you can really get into VCO ranges. I am
really hungry for the 3 oscillator sound so I think I have answered my own
question here. The VCO can always do the LFO stuff anyway.

Of course I also want a 101, but it shouldn't be much longer now anyway.
Anybody have a good Hi-Hat patch and modules needed? Sorry so long winded, I

think my work is putting amphetamine in the coffee these days! Ha!
