Subject: [motm] Re: Realistic cabinet/panel dimensions

Hey man!

I built my cabinet 9" deep and its been more than
sufficient.
My deepest module is the blacet time machine.
From the back of the front panel to the edge of the
stooge bracket measures about 7 3/16" (just measured).
You should be ok with 8" if you dont mount your power
distribution boards on the back, but rather on the
bottom interior of the cabinet (for each row).
However, if you choose to mount your power supply in
the back, you will have more options for module
placement if you build a deeper cabinet.

My cabinet was built to the 1.75" x 8.75" panel specs,
but I added 1/32" slop (to the 8.75" vertical
measurement) just in case, and it was a good idea.
Strangely, my -800 eg is a tight squeeze in some spots
in the cabinet (which must not be perfectly straight).
On the other hand, my dual vca has about 1/16" gap
(short) lengthwise. There must have been some
variation over time with the motm panel manufacturing.

My cabinet is a 24U and was built exactly 42" wide
(interior). Despite this, I still have about 1/16"
gap on both sides of the cabinet, which is too small
for me to notice (it is not a visual distraction).

If you build a little large and use 1/2" lip for
mounting the modules you should be safe, as the panel
mounting holes are much larger than the screws and
will allow you to shift the modules around a bit.
