Rather than deal with a matchbox, I would recommend a small mixer.
Overall, you will get much more value for your money. I use a Mackie
1202 all the time. Which go for around $175 on the used market.
It's a matchbox, a mic pre, a headphone amp, a mixer, a feedback
control for looping effects, etc. It even does FET distortion and
has a 2-band EQ. And unlike a matchbox, when used as an input for
your filters and other modules, you can control the amount of gain,
which is very important for what you want to do.
