That's really too bad. I bet that would have been a great place to
play. That's why I'm going to be setting up before my next show
(sharing a venue with some other bands) for the whole 'Me on MOTM, Moog
Etherwave Theremin, Casion SK-5, friend on Feedback Mixer, and probably
sharing an SH-101' thing. (∗Cough Cough∗ May 6, Germantown NY, info at
myspace.com/overandmusic - 'band' at myspace.com/harryxenu ∗Cough Couugh∗)
The interesting thing is, I finally, FINALLY got a proper appreciation
for the MOTM-420 filter and the usefulness of the
resonance-changing-as-input-level-changes thing. I usually drove the
filter with an oscillator, and rarely with a VCA or anything in front of
it, but I did a sort of interesting patch in which I had an electric
guitar run through a pre-amp driving, among other things, the FM in on
the 420, and also the AUDIO in. Description as follows:
"Formaldehyde Face is kinda interesting, the patch was amazing, I had
his guitar run through my modular FMing a filter that was driven into
self-oscillation, but then I fed the audio of the guitar through the
filter. since it was an MS-20 clone filter, it has this tendency (as
the MS-20 does) to lower its resonance when the input signal level
increases. So, when he would hit a note on the guitar, it would pass
the sound of the guitar through with no resonance, so no 'obvious FM
sound,' but as the note decayed, the resonance of the filter would
increase, eventually reaching self-oscillation, and of course getting
'that fm sound' as driven by the guitar, causing all sorts of
harmonically unrelated sound to 'morph' out of the decaying note."
And he got a feel for it, and realized that the amplitude and frequency
of what he played (at those lower volumes) strongly had a serious effect
on the FM sound, so he got pretty expressive with it. This is certianly
the neatest sounding patch I've ever done involving a 'real' (heh)
instrument. It's on the "song" 'Harry Xenu - Formaldeyhyde Face' but
there's a lot of stuff going on there. All of those projects are very
'noise/experimental.' I might just take some earlier chunks from the
unedited recording and make some MP3 files if anyone is interested.
