Larry,
This is actually a very common use of VC on envelopes. So much so, that many
preset synths, analog or not, have this built in.
The other very common thing to do with VC is to control attack and release
times with keyboard velocity. My Chroma allows me to control attack time
with keydown velocity, and release time with keyup velocity. It makes for
some very expressive string patches, provided you master the keyboard
technique.
