Oh, I MUST disagree. I have one and cannot imagine doing a mix without it.
I know everyone has ways they use certain gear. Let me tell you how I
like to use this one. I use one channel for my bass and one for drums. I
find that the presence of the bass can be expanded without increasing the
volume. Bass is already one of the largest signals in your mix. I have
found that I can get "more" bass sound with the Aphex without increasing
the signal level (big bottom part).
I use the exciter to dial in the snare. You can almost "tune" the snare
sound in the mix so that it is clear without being too loud. You reach a
point where with lots of stuff in a mix, you have to find ways to "bring
out" individual elements so they do not get lost. Eventually, you cannot
just make it louder.
To me sampled drums (like my Alesis D4) are completely dead sounding. The
Aphex is what makes them acceptable to me.
I hope that "used to feel about" means that you too have found a niche for
this unique piece.
