Subject: GX-1 filter news & update

From: "Paul Schreiber" <synth1@...>
Date: 2004-03-22

a) Thanks to Larry, Dave, Scott, Chuck and all others that attended AHMW meeting
yesterday. Sorry I wasn't there to defend myself against the Serge/Frac-Rack
onslaught :)

b) Old Crow and I just finished 1hr discussion on the GX-1 filter. For those of
you not following this, Crow 'reversed engineered' original VCF modules (epoxy
potted) and built a 'modern' version, but still 100% discrete audio path. The
consensus is that the filter does indeed sound 'GX-1 like', especially when used
as a LP/HP pair (think Keith Emerson's "Pirates" off of Works Vol. 2).

We decided that the circuit could fit on the '190 pc board size, and also use
the '190 sheet metal and support bracket. So, I'm happy to announce that there
∗will∗ be a MOTM-485 GX-1 VCF, available June 10th (yes, THIS June 10th) for
$189 kit and $259 assembled (includes royalty payment back to Crow). PLEASE
PLEASE PLEASE wait until May 1st to order, using the OFFICIAL order form on the
website. I'm not going to announce it anywhere else until June 1st, so current
MOTM users get a head start in the shipments. I also will have the kits READY TO
GO OUT on June 10th. I will have 6 or so assembled units ready on "Day 1" as
well.

This will NOT effect the '510 shipments or the '480 shipments. Because I'm not
going to do most of the work :)

Which brings up a 'change in business' for MOTM going forward. It's no secret
that my #1 'problem' is being slow to deliver. And there IS a way to correct
that, which I will do starting with the '485. That is: outsourcing more of the
work. Which in turn means....you ∗pay more∗. I don't ∗make more∗, the 3rd
parties get the additional $$$. But if faster delivery is what people want, I
can do that easily enough. Start saving your pennies :)

c) I made a sizeable dent in the kit backlog last week (26 modules shipped) and
spent this weekend soldering (mostly '440s). This week is 70% soldering, 30%
kitting VCOs ('310s almost done, and then '300s).

d) I'm just about done writing the '510 manual (the Theory section is quite
detailed, which I hope ∗some∗ of you folks take the time to read). Stooge Larry
had the proto at AHMW, confusion abounded :) It's looking like '510s start
shipping April 15th. I just received 1000 jacks that need prepping, and then I
can start kitting up (R and Cs already kitted).

That's it for now, more happy emails this week (this means you, Harry R.!)
