Two ways. The "modern" way is to use a router and router table, or a
dado on a table saw. The board is slide on it's end across the router or
dado (think of a saw blade as wide as the cut).

various basic woodworking joints and techniques that will be useful in

Actually you use a hand saw to cut the sides and a wood chisel to remove
the wood in slivers from the bottom. The above book is the bible of
joints. This book shows you don't need all those expensive noisy
machines to do wooding. Just expensive quiet hand tools :-).
