I used 3/16" birch plywood for my back panel. That's thick enough to drill
holes through so I could attach the back using screws instead of nails. I
can see back access being useful now and then, especially once the front
gets filled up. The back panel screws are attached to small blocks of solid
oak. With the right size pilot hole these blocks will easily last 50 cycles
or more of screw insertion and removal.

You don't need any ventilation. There's enough holes through the jacks to
let any heat escape.
