I have a poly 800 mkII. I don't know those bands but I learned
synthesis on my MKII. You may run into some problems with the 800
and the 800II as far as some sequencers will clear out all your
sounds and stuff like that. It's unfortunate but true. As for the
sounds, well... I think I like the filter on this synth better than
the filter on the Roland MKS-70, it's a damned cool sounding filter:
really dark and all kinds of liquid bubbly res (IMHO). The poly's
are cheap and readily available, which makes them a good bet for
someone who's learning synthesizers.
I like the bass sounds on the poly-800 a lot. Also, you can get
a lot of those "experimental" kinds of sounds out of one I think...
OH YEA, and you can do that filter mod so you have cutoff and
resonance knobs to your filter on a MKI, so that's pretty neato.
They're also good for bread and butter synth sounds, I've made lots
of classic pads, leads, organs, even some good synth brass with my
poly-800mkII.
