Storing the edited program to some memory position is OK?

My (original) Poly-800 went out for repair because it wasn't storing the patches after the battery had been replaced. The guy put in a new chip (though it wasn't quite the same one that it was supposed to be, from what he said); it's the first chip in the series on the motherboard.

Now, even though the Poly stores the presets when it's not plugged in, I can't load my original sounds from tape, .WAV file or iPhone. Everything goes fine, I get the "Good" message at the end, but none of the sounds are updated.

I'm setting the switches to "Enable" for reading from tape (High) and for writing to the programs. No matter how many times I've tried this (with the same tape that worked fine 6 months ago), the sounds that are in memory are not overwritten.

I've had this synth in this guy's shop twice now; I'd hate to have to go back and yell at him for something he'll probably just give up on, anyway.

Does anyone have any ideas why it will "load" the sounds, but not overwrite anything in memory?

Thanks in advance!

Steve
