I just finally completed my "modified Moog slayer mod". I could say I did it halfway, and even twisted that half. No resonance potentiometer, NO holes drilled. Read on.
My original idea was to replace the "great" TUNE pot with VCF pot. I did that. But in the very beginning I actually considered doing the full mod by also replacing the POWER/VOLUME pot with resonance pot. I would have moved the POWER/VOLUME pot to the rear panel.
I used a stereo audio pot just because I had one from this:
(The NAD 6040 was considered useless long time ago, but I waited for years to be sure before I demolished it. It really had some component failure(s) and didn't record properly. My Fostex X-30 plays back slightly better and I got an AKAI deck too, so I think I'll survive.)
The twists in the mod:
- VCF pot replaces TUNE pot, physically! soldered in place
- for the unused half of the dual pot: new holes and pot assembly PCB foil cut as needed
- TUNE pot wires are cut near the mother board connector end
- +V wire serial resistor is soldered on the pot assembly PCB over a cut in foil (this makes wiring to the power diode much safer and easier, no heat shrink required)
- no new GROUND wire for VCF pot: ground is already available at the pot assembly PCB
- TUNE pot rewired (here we need a new ground wire: found a GND spot next to the connector on motherboard) and relocated INSIDE the unit, not a single new hole to the unit

When I have audio online I will let you know. All I can say it works beautifully.
Cheers from Mikkeli, Finland!
