Well i think if the 300ma were not ok then the psu will have burnt out and never worked with the synth but as the user stated he used it after the problem with other synths and was ok..!
If the -5 volt rail is missing then he should get light only when the tape switch is on..!

You need a minimum of a 1A power supply. More is fine, as long as it's still 9V
and still the correct polarity. It's very unlikely that a 300mA power supply
will even get it to light up the display.
