I haven’t ever used extra wire withRadio Shack type battery holders. They just need a couple of smallmodifications. The goal is to get the battery holder to sit flat on top of thetwo chips on either side. The metal contact pins on the holder are a bit tooclose together but they are also a bit long, so just bend them out until theyreach the solder pads. There are also three little plastic “leg”pins on the bottom of the holder. You need to cut one of them off to get theholder to sit flat.
Once you have it so it looks like it willsit flat, fill each solder pad with solder, then coat the metal pins on theholder with solder, set it in place and reheat both solder pads. Done.

Yep. They work, they're cheap, and they're easy tofind when it comes time to replace them. Besides, I'll probably be selling thismachine anyway, so it isn't necessary for me to ensure that the battery lastsforever.
