Subject: AtomaHawk-800r - racking the AtomaHawk-(EX)800

From: Atom Smasher <atom@...>
Date: 2009-01-07

i just picked up a 2U rack case, which may be the new home for my EX800. i
really wanted to do this in 1U, but i think the front panel (buttons,
LEDs, knobs) as it is will really fit better in 2U.

before i start cutting metal... mike: are there any upgrades planned that
would impact my front panel layout? how about an LC Display?

also this might be a reasonable feature request, lemme know: how about
sysex strings to emulate front-panel actions (aka: buttons). if that could
be done, i could get away with a front panel consisting of not much more
than a power switch, volume knob, and 7segment LEDs, and comfortably fit
it all in a 1U. then i could set up my pc1600x (and i'm sure someone here
could do that as a software application) to emulate all of the front-panel
buttons, then maybe i'd only need a "write" button on the front panel to
enable PROM flashing. maybe that sysex functionality would justify/require
a few bytes for a device ID?

in some ways, it would be like a matrix-1000 module... hehe... maybe i'll
call it an AtomaHawk-8000r?

it's still early, so i'm not sure yet if i'll just chop up the EX800 and
rack it (maintaining the same aesthetic); do something ghetto with toggle
switches and sticker-labels (DIY/mad scientist aesthetic); or go all out
and do custom panels like my FTB-303 (and probably maintain essentially
the same aesthetic, with some updates):

-------------------------------------------------

"Implicit in the term "national defense" is the notion of
defending those values and ideals which set this Nation
apart. For almost two centuries, our country has taken
singular pride in the democratic ideals enshrined in its
Constitution, and the most cherished of those ideals have
found expression in the First Amendment. It would indeed
be ironic if, in the name of national defense, we would
sanction the subversion of one of those liberties...
which makes the defense of the Nation worthwhile."
-- Earl Warren, United States v. Robel 1967
