using passive components (similar to my other mods, with ease of
implementation and a small list of easy to find parts a high priority), i
haven't been able to get anything impressive along those lines.

what might work, is to break the connection carrying the signal you'd like
to overdrive (eg; audio input to filter) and insert some jacks to make an
insert loop, then insert a distortion pedal. i haven't tried it, but i've
got enough outboard effects that it's not high on my to-do list.
