Yes, I can confirm that you must remove D1 and R1.

I've also been able to confirm that all versions of KLM-596 from
KLM-596-1 through KLM-596-7 include D1 and R1.

But on versions KLM-596-8 and up (I don't how many more rev's there
are) they do not have D1 and R1 installed at all. In fact, they don't
appear on the board at all.
