It would be advisable if you have an internal battery to replace it.
However, do not plug the synth in if you are replacing the battery - you
have to open it up and solder in there! If it has a backup battery it's
a Poly800-II or an EX800, both of which can have their patches reloaded
from MIDI SYSEX files.

You can back up to tape, but it's like going back to the old evil days
of home computers. You would need to go to MIDI in on your PC. You need
a SYSEX sender or Cakewalk/similar program to send the dump request to
the Poly. You don't need a USB MIDI interface, the one in your soundcard
(gameport) will be fine for this, or if you have ISA slots, a used MPU-
401 interface is the most stable.

You can use a portable MIDI datafiler, or tape. Tape loading doesn't
take too long but can be temperamental. Poly 800s are so cheap, if
you're using two sets of patches or you are using one in mission-
critical situations, just get another ;)
