you can get a cheap continuuity tester at almost any
hardware or auto store. it is a little pen with a
lightbulb and a metal pin coming out of it, there is
also a little lead which can clip to another part of
the circuit.
The multimeter or volt/ohm-meter is used to measure
resistances and voltages. The reading are compared to
what should be going on in order to determine the
cause of the fault.

gear repair 101, check to make sure the power and
output connections are all kosher.
Then troubleshoot the power supply.
