Well if you notice I did put a ∗?∗ after prototype. Your second second
guess is a very good one. Myabe I should have just called it an
experimental piece. I was curious enough about it to trace it's ownership
back as far as I could. Here is what it's second owner had to sayabout it:

"Yes, that piece used to be mine. It had been given to me by a guy named
Jim who used to work for EML. As you suspected, it was built there out of
"spare" parts, as an expanmsion for an EML-101 system, just for fun. He
also has a 1 of a kind prototype EML guitar controller looking thing that
is amazingly beautiful, I have never seen a device live it. Sorry, I do
not have a picture, and he has it locked away in storage somewhere for the
last 2 years, he isn't sure which of his storage facilities it is in right
now. Hope you get it back to 100% working order, it's a cool piece! I
sent it to K∗∗∗∗ for some reason, so that he could find a good home for
it."

The front panel matches the exact size of the EML101 panel. The multipin
socket on the upper left is the mate to the multipin cable they use on the
sequencer.
The mutipin socket appears to be a breakout of some kind as it's connected
to all those phjone jacks around it. The only label there says
"SYNTO"....anyone guess what that means? Connecting a cable to it and
plugging it into a 400 does nothing but send the sequencer into complete
insanity, all LED's firing.

The first 3 jacks on the left are connected to nothing and the painted
routing lines lead to an empty hole right above them. The rest of the piece
is functional but hard to control. It is a sort of VC
mixer/processer/routing station. I'd love to know what the unfinshed
sections were meant to do.

Certainly someone could have "faked"all this but to fool who and why? At
the very least it is clearly designed to work as an acccessory for other
EML gear.

What is it?
