Hi Guys
I was really glad to find this grp! Here is my EML story:
When I was going to Hi school in McLean, Virginia, I started getting
into electronic music, especially with the prog bands at the time)
Yes, Genesis, Gentle Giant, ect) but I also listened to the advant
gard stuff like Verese, Stockhousen, Tod Dochtdoter ( probably
misspelled), ect and also the German school of stuff like Klaus
Schulze. I was determined to get a synthesizer. I did a lot of
research, and decided to get an EML 500. This was my first synth.
Although I did not know all the technical terms at the time, I was
still able to coax some nice sounds from it. I remember using an old
sony reel to reel as a delay unit( worked well!) and a friend got a
roland synth, and we did jams together.
I also remember surprising my other musician friends one time when I
brought over a suitcase, and they were thinking it was my gig bag( as
I am also a guitarist) and then opening up, and saw the look on their
faces! ( BTW: it was the Manring brothers who I played with. Later
years, the young brother became famous for his bass playing. His name
was Michael :-) )
Then we moved to Sunny California. I went to DeAnza college and took
the electronic music course, then taught by Allen Strange( who
recently passed away..a sad day for all of us!!) I became his student,
and took private lessons from him as well. From that point, I wanted
something different, like a modular. So..I sold the EML 500, and got a
EML200/300 from EMSA. I had dealing with Dennis Kelly and Everette
Hafner. ( anybody know those guys??) I had a great time with it,
especially the 300, as it was an alternate controller that allowed you
to tune it in any scale you wanted. So I studied up on different world
system tunings, and had a huge assortment of tunings I used..including
a regular guitar tuning so I can do Jan Hammer licks :-) At one point,
I had a wrapped long cable going to the 300,and a strap so I can play
it hanging around my neck. It worked well! That was in 1977. But..then
the 300 broke down, and gave it to a friend to fix, and never saw it
again :-( . Then I got a Yamaha CS5, which actually interfaced well
with it.
Many years later the DX7 came, and I concentrated on digital synths.
Then got into softsynths. Starting with doing 3 Crystal banks, I was
contacted by lots of devs, and now work for Camel Audio as well as
lots of contract work from NI, Image Line, and others.
Upon moving again, I now have my EML in a promanant position in the
studio, but something has happened to it which I hope to get some help
here.
The 2 oscillators at the raw output sound as if there are two signals
in them, almost like ring modulation. I also hear a humming sound
whenever I plug the 200 into my mixer. So I thought it was a grounding
issue, and tried plugging it in various places around the studio to no
avail. Can anyone help here? While I can still do modulation sounds
and effects, I can't use it as a 'melodic' synthesizer until this
issue is fixed. Any ideas would be appreciated!
and also happy to have found this grp!
