Well, if it's a factory made cable there are two "bands" of insulating
material on the plug itself. A mono plug only has one. If it's a home-brew
it can be a mono anyway, then you have to open and check the cord, if there
is two or three soldering points at either end...

Yes, 2=mono, 3 =stereo (one ground and 1 or 2 signal)
