Hi Folks,
Here's some info. If you buy a product from a company, let's say a DDrum, you have
purchased a license to use the sounds on the EPROMS for music production. That means
you can produce a record using those sounds and make money off of the recording. Now,
if you loose the sounds, you can, typically, go to the company and get a re load, because
you have paid a limited license for those EPROM files. If you sell the individual sounds or
files as a library, you violate your license. It's illegal. This applies to us in this way: if
someone has a need to re load his EPROMS and someone gives him those files at no cost,
you are not violating any copyright law. If someone sells those same files, they are
violating copyright. If you take any Simmons sounds and re sample them to another
format, such as fixing them to CD as audio files, and sell them, you violate the law.
Period. Patrice is correct in saying that whomever is selling these is doing so at his own
risk. What I find strange, is that we have a few of the remaining simmons boxes on earth,
and we're intent on making money by witholding the IP that came as a part of the original
deal. Can't we share? Any SDX users are welcome to anything I have if it helps keep these
great boxes alive. I'm using mine on a record right now, and it's crapping out. It's forced
me to dump my samples to my S760, whch doesn't have half the filtering capability that
my X has. With a schematic, my engineer could fix it, but to buy one is prohibitive.
Simmons was never very good with support to begin with, and the amount of resources
available in 89 were limited. Now, in 2005, were in trouble. Let's stick together here
folks. Anyone needs any help with the SDX, if I can give it, I will. In a few weeks we'll have
another resource ( SDX4U.com ) and I'll post that info as it becomes available.
All the best,
Keep kicking
Ed
