Yes, thankfully they are socketed.. it’s a later model SDS7 with the black card slots on the backplane. As far as I can tell all other functions seem normal. I am running the standard 5 card configuration (Bass, Snare, Tom Tom Tom).. but will try cards in all other slots to ensure proper operation…
I did notice that the Data Knob on this particular unit spins very easily and is susceptible to vibration causing unwanted program or value changes… any tips on how to maybe tighten it up a bit?
I’ll be diving in to it this week… fun fun fun… J

Subject: [Simmons Drums] RE: SDS7 question... "sometimes" no LED display on power up
Have you checked the pins of the "unlit" LED's with a logic probe - there should be no signal when unlit (of course :-)). Then work back from there to see where there is a signal. Not as straightforward as it sounds because the displays are multiplexed, but you should get an idea of where the problem lies.
I'll assume the PIA is working as other functions are ok, so check IC6, IC9 and IC10, plus transistors T1-T7, but from what you describe I'm going to guess at a problem with the output of IC10 reaching the LED display.
On mine, all IC's are socketed so hopefully yours are too ?
