Subject: SDS8 trigger position

I pulled my SDS8 pads apart today as I had a reduced triggering volume problem, with some simple advice I simply cut the resistors out of the circuit and now they work fine (thanks Matt).
I noticed the piezo triggers are positioned off-centre and I wonder why they are not in the centre. Has anyone here experimented with positioning them in the centre?
I noticed that if I hit the pads on the opposite side of the centre to where the piezo's are the signal is quieter than in the centre or above where the piezo is.
Also has anyone experimented with using thinner ply to get a more realistic feel or using thicker rubber?
